Six months of reflection, reorganization and rewriting policies has put Edison State College in a better place, according to an internal report made public Friday. If all goes well, Edison State’s accreditation will be reaffirmed this summer. The college is midway through a yearlong probation for violating academic and operational protocol, and administrators are prepping for an accrediting team’s return visit in April. The internal report will be sent later this month to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges, which accredits institutions in 11 states…

In 1977 and again in ’78, a 5-9 point guard named Susan Summons, coached by Alfreda Harris, helped Roxbury Community College, located in the suburbs of Boston, to the National Junior College championship tournament. Now, 35 years after Summons started playing for Harris, the two have been selected for induction into the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place July 26 in Niceville. Summons went on to play two years at Lamar University before returning to Roxbury in 1982 to be the program’s coach. She stayed on at Roxbury through 1986, when she began her long run as the coach at Miami Dade College…

They’ve never gone back…Now, Candy is 27 and working toward a master’s degree in Latin American studies from the University of Florida. She is in the process of becoming an American citizen. “When you grow up here, you’re more than likely to stay here as an immigrant,” she said. But for more than half of her life, she was an illegal immigrant for whom higher education seemed an unreachable dream.
