Barry University law professor Elizabeth Megale, a former public defender and defense lawyer, wrote a paper for the American Journal of Trial Advocacy two years ago highlighting what she sees as shortcomings with the law. Among the problems, she said: the law expanded the “Castle Doctrine,” a common law which gave individuals the right to stand their ground in their home or on their property when they felt threatened.
