Experts question promises of convention windfall
Tbo.com
But those who hold this view may be wearing rose-shaded glasses, in the view of some who study the economic impact of major events. “It’s absurd,” said Philip Porter, an economics professor at the University of South Florida who has examined events such as the Super Bowl. Porter questions how much the visitors can do to help deliver the region from hard times. ”What are those people going to buy? They get hotel rooms — and they are not all staying in deluxe suites — they eat meals and buy T-shirts. They are not spending anywhere near that.” The RNC Tampa Bay Host Committee projects that direct spending during the convention could reach $175 million to $200 million.

Statement by BRAULIO COLÓN, Executive Director for Florida College Access Network, On Florida’s 2012 ACT Report
Media Alert
“Today’s release of 2012 test scores by ACT shows minimal improvement by Florida high school graduates meeting college readiness benchmarks since 2009. While we should celebrate our students and teachers in this trend and in the fact that 70% of our 2012 high school graduates took the ACT, these results underscore the disconnect between the aspirations of our graduates and the academic performance necessary to succeed in postsecondary education.” “Regardless of race or socioeconomic status, we should expect all Florida high school graduates to be college and career ready. Today’s report should remind all education leaders of the importance and value in raising the quality of instruction in all schools and raising academic standards and expectations for all students.” Click here to view the ACT report on Florida…
