O’Shea confirmed as president of Sarasota’s New College

Donal O’Shea, who served as faculty dean for Mt. Holyoke College for 14 years, was officially confirmed as the new president of Sarasota’s New College during a meeting Thursday of the Florida Board of Governors. O’Shea, who was unanimously appointed by the New College Board March 10, has been praised by board Chair Bob Johnson for his “intellectual abilities, personal values and visionary determination.” He was chosen over three other finalists for the post to replace Gordon “Mike” Michalson, who has been the college’s chief administrative officer for 16 of the past 20 years…

BOG rejects Academic Enrichment fee proposal

The Florida Board of Governors’ (BOG) Budget and Finance Committee voted against USF’s proposed request for a new “fee-neutral” student fee. During its Wednesday meeting, the committee voted 5-4 to reject the Academic Enrichment and Opportunity Fee, which would have gone toward student involvement initiatives such as travel abroad and internships and was estimated to generate $751,704 for the Tampa campus. The BOG also rejected similar “academic enhancement” fees such as the University of Florida’s Undergraduate Enhancement Fee and the University of North Florida’s Academic Enhancement Fee, which was intended to improve student retention and graduation rates.
