Grid-irons: you are duly sentenced to a prison-sponsored stadium

…Every so often, scientists believe some sort of tear opens up in the spacetime continuum, causing part of this future to arrive in our present. And the other day, it seems, was one of those moments. How else to explain the fact that naming rights to a Florida football stadium have been sold to a private prison corporation? Yip Yap: Noted and Quoted FLHE Voices from Around the Web
Editorial: The name game
Gainesville Sun
It’s tricky business for universities to put names on buildings, whether they’re honoring someone or simply selling naming rights to the highest bidder. Naming a building after a person runs the risk that their name will be later tarnished. Ask Penn State University, which named its library after the late football coach Joe Paterno and his wife. A child sex-abuse scandal involving one of Paterno’s assistants caused the university to remove a statue of Paterno from campus, but his name remains on the building. Naming a building after a company runs a different set of risks, as Florida Atlantic University has discovered. FAU recently accepted a $6 million donation from GEO Group, a Boca Raton-based private prison corporation, in exchange for naming rights to the university’s football stadium…

Letters: Stadium deal is a win-win for FAU, GEO Group
Palm Beach Post
The better the sport teams, the more interest in attending the university. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize this fact, but apparently it takes someone with more intelligence than Editor of the Editorial Page Randy Schultz (“Hard time for FAU after stadium deal.”) Former head coach Howard Schnellenberger and Florida Atlantic University administrators have worked hard setting the foundation for excellence in FAU’s sport programs. As an alumnus, I am proud of the growth of FAU’s football program. It has improved because of better facilities and drawing some very talented athletes. This year another milestone will be set, with a new conference and creation of an exploding fan base…MICHAEL CIRULLO, SR. – West Palm Beach
