UF and Alligator try to hash out compromise on rack removal
Gainesville Sun (blog)
Representatives of the Independent Florida Alligator and the University of Florida sat down today to discuss the university plan to replace the paper’s distinctive orange rackswith black modular units owned by UF. It was an amiable meeting, except for one telling exchange. Thomas Julin, a Miami-based attorney representing the Alligator, expressed concern that the plan might allow UF to restrict distribution of the student newspaper if it disagreed with a story in it. Moving away from the orange racks might also cause readers to be less likely to get the paper, he said…

At Rollins, Obama calls Romney’s ‘trickle-down’ tax plan ‘fairy dust’
Orlando Sentinel
President Barack Obama, speaking to 2,400 screaming supporters at Rollins College on Thursday, said the 2012 election offers “two fundamentally different visions for America,” between what he called Mitt Romney‘s tax cuts for the rich versus his own defense of the middle class. Interrupted several times by a crowd chanting “Four more years!” the president’s roughly 30-minute speech contrasted his own economic plan with a study released Wednesday by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center that said Romney’s proposed tax cuts for the wealthy would boost taxes for the middle class…

Yip Yap: Noted and Quoted FLHE Voices from Around the State
A lovely parting gift for Florida
Hernando Today
During the last legislative session, one legislator used his position as appropriations chair to push through a bill creating the state’s 12th university while cutting $300 million from the existing 11. Not one of the legislative leaders reined in his costly pet project. Some claimed the state needed more STEM degrees — short for science, technology, engineering and mathematics — as though UF’s College of Engineering is somehow a front for the liberal arts. Despite editorials in opposition from all the state’s major newspapers, as well as the well-reasoned advice from the Council of 100, Gov. Rick Scott signed the bill into law, declaring: “At a time when the number of graduates of Florida’s universities in the STEM fields is not projected to meet workforce needs, the establishment of Florida Polytechnic University will help us move the needle in the right direction.”…Paula Dockery is a term-limited Republican senator from Lakeland who is chronicling her final year in the Florida Senate…

State’s prison population declines
Sarasota Herald-Tribune
The declining prison population is a sign of a dramatic decrease in Florida’s overall crime rate, which peaked in 1991, but has declined by more than half since then, according to analysis by Florida State University’s College of Criminology and Criminal Justice. “The primary driver of the drop in crime in Florida over the last 20 years seemed to be the increasing incarceration rate,” said Bill Bales, head of FSU’s Center for Criminology and Public Policy Research. “It doesn’t seem to be economics. It’s not the level of police presence. It’s not demographics…
