The University of Florida ranked second among all colleges and universities with more than 130 alumni serving as Peace Corps volunteers in 2011, a number that might grow under a new program allowing UF students to earn a master’s degree as part of volunteering. UF had 101 undergraduate and 30 graduate school alumni serving last year in the Peace Corps, a combined number ranking only behind the University of Washington. Sen. JD Alexander wasn’t ready to talk Tuesday about amendments filed by Sen. Jim Norman, which aim to give the University of South Florida back a big chunk of the funding Alexander proposed cutting from the school. Instead, Alexander offered some insight into the timetable he envisions for the state’s new 12th university. If all goes according to Alexander’s plan, Florida Polytechnic could be separately accredited by July, he said. That would first require approval of a conforming bill slipped into Alexander’s budget that would split USF Polytechnic off from USF immediately. And it would require expedited work from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools — to accredit USF Poly as a separate campus of USF, and then put in a change order to give the campus accreditation as a separate institution. Accrediting the school completely independently could take another six months to a year, he said. Alexander said he recently got assurance from SACS that that’s possible.

The demand of dual enrollment programs in Broward, Fla., has grown so much that two high schools - Coconut Creek and South Broward in Hollywood - are starting programs in which teachers accredited by Broward College will teach at the schools. The two new projects will try to mimic the success of McArthur High School in Hollywood, Fla., where students can enroll in the “Mustang Academy,” a section of college-level courses. Several teachers at Cooper City High and Coral Springs High are also licensed to teach dual enrollment courses. The Broward School District has also established the College Academy at Broward College, where more than 300 juniors and seniors report to the Davie, Fla., campus instead of a traditional high school.

As a researcher in the field of early childhood education, I relish the idea of uncovering how factors in early childhood related to children, families, and schools, connect to children’s academic achievement once they enter school. As a parent, I often find it exasperating. Take for example our recent findings of a study that looked at over 3,000 preschoolers in the state of Florida. We found that preschoolers’ early writing skills – their ability to copy letters, shapes, and numbers – significantly predicted both their grades and standardized test scores in second grade reading and math.
